Gettysburg
Many bloody battles have been won and lost in this country. One of them was the battle of Gettysburg. Many were killed and wounded defending their beliefs and many lost hopes. Then Abraham Lincoln wrote one of the most beautiful pieces of writing to commemorate and thank the perished soldiers and to motivate and inspire the remaining. Lincoln used a time of hurt and pain to fuel his country's anger. He realizes that he is at a memorial service, but at the same time he uses the tragedy and turns it into hopes and dreams. He bases his speech on life and uses a lot of imagery to do so. He uses three images of birth in the first sentence. Lincoln says: "conceived in liberty;" "brought forth;" and "by our fathers." Then the birth is immediately followed by images of death. He once again says: "final resting
He did a great job of giving respect to the dead and adding fire to the once dying flames in the hearts of everyone. He wants to make it sound like our freedom will be immortal when he says, "this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom" and "shall not perish from the earth. He was respectful and hopeful to the mourned and inspirational, patriotic, and pious to the country. He compares the nation to Jesus! Christ. His speech was exactly what the people needed to hear. It depends on what subject he was covering. Lincoln is a man of few words but who knows how to get his point across. People get a much sharper image of what Lincoln is talking about. " This is his rally cry where he really lets people feel his emotion through his words. He consoles the family, mentions the problem at hand, and motivates the many remaining and gives hope for the future. He uses repetition also to get that effect on the reader. Most people are familiar with this belief so he compares the nation to Jesus. " He makes a lot of reference to Jesus Christ and God. By using metaphors, great word choice, repetition, clauses, and parallelism he covers all aspects that needed to be covered. The first time it is used to talk about the declaration of independence and how men are created equal.
