Drug Testing

             Since the Supreme Court ruled that schools would be allowed to perform drug testing on students, many angry parents have rebelled. They have created web-sites, complained at school board meetings and taken their cases to court. Although they claim their constitutional rights have been infringed, the Supreme Court Justices remain firm in their decision, and have proponents of the tests backing them. The question remains, should students be subjected to drug tests?
             Many citizens of the United States have risen up to try to over turn the Supreme Court's decision. Although few of their lawsuits have proved productive, they continue their quest to ban the tests. One group of angry opposers has even gone as far as to launch a web site campaign called "Drug Testing Fails our Youth". Their three main arguments are that drug testing is humiliating, it creates an environment where students cannot trust adults, and it may discourage students from participating in extracurricular activities which has shown to be one of the most effective deterrents to drug use. Some students refuse to take the tests at all. Randy Willis' son is one example of this. His son sued the school after refusing to take the required drug test for readmission after being expelled. "I have a great deal of pride in my son in that he did what he believed, and what he did was right. It shows that once and for all that the Constitution doesn't stop at the schoolhouse door." According to Dr. Marsha Rosenbaum, author of Safety 1st: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens, Drugs, and Drug Education, "None of us want young people using drugs, so let's encourage - not discourage -- their interest in other activities." Even schools that agree with the idea of testing are against the cost of applying the tests. They say they do not find enough teens that test positive to compensate the money spent.
