Mormons Denomination or Sect?
It is fairly easy to tell where certain churches land on the sect- denomination continuum, however, there are instances when the line becomes blurred and it is very hard to tell were the church in question falls on this continuum. This is the case with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, more commonly known as the Mormon Church. It like all other churches began as a sect, but the Mormon people have taken great pains to become more acceptable to the public in recent years. The changes that the Mormons have made are only evident when their beliefs and practices are compared and contrasted with those of mainline churches, in this case and Episcopal Church. The Mormon church is constantly dancing along that fine line of sect and denomination, and it seems that they have one foot on each side. There are certain characteristics that are helpful in deciding where a church falls on the sect denomination continuum, but in many of these the Mormons fall somewhere in between the sect and the denomination. It is helpful to look at both Churches, Mormon and Episcopal, to ascertain the differences and similarities of both. The first living prophet was Joseph Smith, and today's prophet is Gordon B. However, they allow the members of their congregation to get up and tell their stories once a month. This is not true of the Episcopal church. Although the ceremonies themselves might not be performed in the same way that Episcopal ceremonies are, they are still very formal. Although men are the only ones who can join the priesthood, women can play an active role in the leadership of the church as well. However, like the Episcopal Church, there are purely formalized admission requirements. In the case of the Mormons, the answer to this is yes and no. Many of the first generation converts were there. is a characteristic Some of these include missionary service, giving a tithing of 10 percent of annual income, and abstaining from all illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee and tea, sexual relationships before marriage and outside of marriage. The Mormons have formalized services, just like the Episcopal. And they are always willing to talk to you about being Mormon, and what they believe in. There is a distinction in the Church between members who are just a part of the congregation and those who are in the priesthood. However, rules about abstaining from things like coffee and tea are what make people think that the Mormons are on the edge. I found out that many of them were Hispanic immigrants who had converted in there home lands.
