Constructing a Sense of 'Other'
When we think about what our identity is, at first, we think about where we were born, what our sex is, what we like, etc. However, to find the difference between us and others who are not us, it is useful to think of our identity. We can establish an identity that can be found only by comparing ourselves with others. There are many ways of looking for what is different. For example, as "The Sneetches" shows, whether bellies have stars or not is a very important problem at first. But later, no one has stars. Then no one is the worst or the best. I understand that though every sneetch can become friendly, no sneetch uses in physical differences to develop its identity. The opposite of this also happens. As "BEING AN OTHER" in SIGNS OF LIFE IN THE USA shows, Melissa Algranati at first feels comfortable by being physically similar to others. This is the only way to be accepted by others because she has domestic circumstances that she could hardly divulge to another person. But later, she d
We are stimulated by others ideas, and sometimes resist others ideas. I think she would have an enjoyable life in the future because she would gain confidence not by being an other but by becoming a real herself. And in "Don't Further Empower Cliques", educators are oppressor for cliques because educators treat cliques unequally from athletes. I understand that if the fence is too high, we couldn't compare ourselves with others, if there is no fence, we could not make our space. Through this process, we can grow up to be an adult. Probably there are many people who don't want to let another person know about themselves not because of protecting their space but because of being a certain race. After comparing with others, we also need to protect our personal space from others. In summary, these examples are connected by the idea that when we establish our identities, we are always related to others. They are automatically seen as destroyers. In case of cliques, expressing their resistance is the only way to identify them. This identity could not be found unless she compares herself with others. In "LIFE ON THE MARGINS: Representing the 'Other' in American Culture", the American Administration authorities are an oppressor for white American nations because of importing African slaves, destroying the Indians that many American nations don't hope so. iscovers a truly comfortable position within herself. "Mending Wall" tell us that whether there is no fence or the fence is too high, we can't see each other.
