The Myths and Advantages of Greek Fraternal Organizations

             For more than 100 years, on college campuses across the nation, Greek Fraternities have established themselves as a part of college life. Being that one's college life severely affects their post-college life, one might say that fraternities can drastically affect someone's post college career. Their have been many rumors and myths surrounding fraternities since their inception. Today, fraternities have been shown in many movies and television shows. What truth is their in the way fraternities are depicted in these modern media representations? It is important to find out the structure of how fraternities are run, so as to clear up any misconceptions about fraternities, and reveal why someone would want to join a fraternity, and the subsequent advantages of joining a fraternity might give a student in finding a post-college career.
             The importance of this topic is quite clear; fraternal members account for 85% of Fortune 500 executives, and nearly half of all United States Presidents ("ATO Facts & Firsts"). Obviously, there are some advantages in joining a fraternity or fraternities would not exist. Research done at Indiana University at Bloomington has shown that there are many advantages to joining a fraternity. Indiana University is the headquarters for the Center of the Study of the College Fraternity (CSCF) and home to a substantial library of information relating to fraternal organizations. CSCF has shown through extensive research that students who join fraternities have better grades than students who do not join fraternities ("Research Agenda"). A survey conducted at the University of Louisville among upperclassman that are members of fraternities showed that those students had better grades after joining their respective fraternities ("Fraternity Life Survey").
