The Myths and Advantages of Greek Fraternal Organizations
For more than 100 years, on college campuses across the nation, Greek Fraternities have established themselves as a part of college life. Being that one's college life severely affects their post-college life, one might say that fraternities can drastically affect someone's post college career. Their have been many rumors and myths surrounding fraternities since their inception. Today, fraternities have been shown in many movies and television shows. What truth is their in the way fraternities are depicted in these modern media representations? It is important to find out the structure of how fraternities are run, so as to clear up any misconceptions about fraternities, and reveal why someone would want to join a fraternity, and the subsequent advantages of joining a fraternity might give a student in finding a post-college career. The importance of this topic is quite clear; fraternal members account for 85% of Fortune 500 executives, and nearly half of all United States Presidents ("ATO Facts & Firsts"). Another problem surrounding fraternities that has developed into a problem recently has been the media. It is a common practice in many fraternities to have initiates or "pledges" designated as sober drivers for brothers of the fraternity during their initiation semester (Kean 56). These fraternity "networks" can also help members elude some legal punishments. The difference between drinking and "binge" drinking is vastly different. These are undeniable facts that fraternities help produce the "Leaders of America," and instill values of leadership in their members. Each member of the executive council has a specific job, and the chapter must vote every final decision made by the executive council, and if the members of the chapter do not come to a majority decision, then any request of the executive council cannot be finalized and therefore not implemented. Of all the students enrolled at public universities only 5% of students in college are in fraternities. But, as is true with everything in life, people can only get so far without hard work and determination. Some fraternities use hazing as a form of education, and as a process of "elimination" to determine which candidates are willing to sacrifice their own ideals and ambitions to benefit the group (Freeark 20). This depiction is far from the truth. It is not uncommon for a member of a fraternity to call an alumnus who is involved in the judicial system o help lessen or even remove minor traffic offenses and misdemeanors (Kean 24). Fraternities have produced 48% of all Presidents, 42% of all US Senators, 30% of all Congressmen, and 40% of all US Supreme Court Justices ("Research Agenda").
