Ku Klux Klan is the name mainly given to two distinct secret societies that played apart in American history, although other less important groups have also used thename. The first Ku Klux Klan was an organisation that thrived in the South during theReconstruction period following the Civil War. The second was a nation-wideorganisation that flourished after World War I. Subsequent groups calling themselvesthe Ku Klux Klan sprang up in much of the South after World War II and in responseto civil-rights activity during the 1960s. The Ku Klux Klan was formed as a social club by a group of ConfederateArmy veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee around 1865. The Ku Klux Klan was not startedbecause of racial animosity nor did they have any political motivation, they justdressed in their white sheets and pillow covers and played pranks during the night. The group adopted the name Ku Klux Klan from the Greek word kuklos, meaningcircle, and the English word clan. In 1867, the Ku Klux Klan began to focus onracism. It was at this time that a Confederate General, Nathan Bedford Forest, tookcharge and was named the first Imperial Wizard. Under the leadership of Fore

Blacks and white sympathisers were oftenthreatened, beaten, or even murdered by Klan members in the South; the Klan usedthe now familiar white robes and hoods to mask their identity. Simmons, a Alabama native, was a minister of theMethodist Episcopal Church. The Ku Klux Klan has gone by several names: they have called themselves theWhite Patriot Party, the National Association of White People, the White AryanResistance Party, the Order of Pale Faces, the Knights of the Rising Sun, the Knightsof White Camilia and even the Black Calvary of Alabama. By 1944 the Ku Klux Klan hadfaded out again. Even though the organisation itself was disbanded, several Klansmen refused to giveup. The KKK became a more powerfulpolitical force as it elected many public officials throughout the nation. Soon after this bill was passed, the Klan all but disappeared. In Mississippi, three civil rightsleaders were killed, in Birmingham, Alabama a church was bombed, killing fourblack girls. The Ku Klux Klanbecame known as the Invisible Empire as it grew and spread rapidly. Simmons alsoorganised two other white supremacy groups in 1915. These groups, unlikethe Ku Klux Klan, died within a matter of years. Following this, Klanmember ship fell to about 5,000 by the early 1970's. He was also a practising physician, organised a newKlan in Stone Mountain and was the man who brought the symbol of the burningcross to the Klan during his first meeting as Imperial Wizard on Thanksgiving day of1915. However, today they focus more onintimidation than they do on violence. The Klan detested the idea of blacks gaining any rights following theCivil War into the Reconstruction, and terrorised blacks to prevent them from votingin elections or practising any other right.
