cityessay
A major challenge for mankind is an informed respose to unprecedented urban growth and the intelligent mangement of urban settlements. The 20th century began with perhaps a dozen cities of 1 million resisdents; it will end with several hundred cities of that size, including about 30 urban areas with population exceeding an arbitrary threshold of 8 million. Most of today?s cities provide neither equilibrium with the enviornment nor stability for its citizens. Ever since the the concept of sustainable development became widely known through the 1980 World Conservation Strategy and 1987 report of Burndtland Commision, it has been dismissed, ignored and forgotten about as far as most major cities are concerned. Many cities have long records of inadequate or ill-advised planning, or in some cases no planning at all. The result is often poverty, inadequate housing, contaminated or depleted water supplies, air pollution, and other forms of environmental degradations. Still the id!ea of a sustainable city is not out of reach and in some cases have been truned into a reality. Now, more than ever before, city governments in alls parts of the world are seeing the need to plan their policies and the use of the land under
A policy has been formulated for the development of new and renewable sources of energy. Certinaly as the technogoly improves and more and more cities adapt these renewable sources of energy, the cities bound to become more environmentally sustainable. China is one the biggiest comsumers for energy and mostly relies on fossil fuesl, but it is sreaching for new means of energy. Unless proper steps are taken into controlling and regulating the massive migrantions, the results can be devasting not only for the citizens of the cities, but for its delicate environment. Unable to dispose of the grabage produced by these dewellers, most of it is burned or in some cases ignored, adding to the degragation of the enviornment. Another problem for cities is water contamination originating from industrial or agricultural wastes as well as human excrement. The search for sustainable form of energy has become a high priority in China. In 1989, in effort of control the problem, a new program was launched. If the cities of the future are to surive and . Reducing PollutionIt is not only desirable, but practical to make the the transition from fossil fuels to more effiecnet and less polluted sources of energy. The benifts of these alternative forms of energy sources are enromous. Complliance is believed to be high in light of the high fines and higly visible police enforcement.
