Catching Sense
In this article Suzanne Carothers discusses how black mother-daughter relationships are so important and that the children learn from what they are taught. The daughters in this study showed the utmost respect for their mothers, they viewed their mothers not only as a parent, but also as a friend and a teacher. One of the more challenging parts of raising a black child in a black neighborhood was that they did not get very many chances to integrate with people from white communities. Parents tried to teach their children to treat white people just as they would anybody else, and actually had to teach them not to be sc
I grew up in a very diverse community where racism and discrimination where a very minimal problem to me. People must see past the whole color issue and just look to see who the person is on the inside. If a child is constantly hearing racist remarks and seeing their family discriminate against others than chances are high that th!ey will do the same. People had grown up in communities that had a very minimal amount of minorities and didn't know how to act around different races. I was also raised in a house with my grandparents along with my parents. They are often raised with extended families and get a variety of different relationships amongst their families. Another point that Carothers makes is that women in this society are taught to be very independent from an early age. Their parents also had there own opinions about races other than their own that they expressed openly in their household. They taught me of past difficulties that they've encountered and showed me how they overcame obstacles. I think that this will ultimately make me a much stronger person than I would have been without ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. When I entered college this atmosphere is far less diverse than what I was used to, however to some the whole environment was a complete change. From grade school through high school I became close to people of a variety of different races. They would have to teach their children to keep an open mind towards things and if they did they would succeed in life. I think that this particular situation helped and will help me in my life. I think this is partially due to the fact that at my house I was never taught to discriminate against people and was just taught to treat everybody equally.
