AUTUMN IN NEW YORK
Autumn in New York is a moving love story that stars Richard Gere as Wil, and Wynona Ryder as Charlotte. Wil, a typical womanizer, is introduced to Charlotte, a unique young woman, by her grandmother, whom he had known for many years, and the two are instantly attracted to each other. Unfortunately, Wil's fear of intimacy and Charlotte's fatal illness will pose serious burdens on what seems to be a budding romance. Artistically done, the movie's plot seems to be directly correlated with the changing of the seasons. The issue of time is a theme that is ever-present and highly symbolized throughout the film. The movie begins in the fall, the time of harvest, and a time to reap what you sow. Perhaps this time of the year is representative of people's potential to harvest what's within, perfect for the joining of lovers. But, although the movie is set up to be a love story, there are problems from the beginning. When Wil looks at women, he sees them as acquisitions. Even if he does like them, he has not shown the potential to share his heart with them. When Charlotte looks at men, she sees the potential of a love filled romance, but at this point in her life, time is not on her side, and thus, it make
Her mistake is not distinguishing this difference, and allowing herself to be hurt by Will before he has reached his love potential. The scene's final scene is shot during spring. s it impossible to have a future with anyone. Even though he cannot change the past, and the mistakes he made, he can make a fresh start with his own family. You see, Wil is forty-eight and has severe intimacy issues. Symbolically, it is a time of renewal, of life, and of new beginnings. This means, specifically, facing his intimacy issues. Years have passed and the only thing that seems to have changed with this character is the woman he is dating at the moment. Because of Charlotte, Will is able to reawaken and renew a bond with his daughter that he had let himself be void of. Will finally finds the potential to love, and asks Charlotte to "let him love her". Thus, the real romance begins, but soo!n comes to an end after Charlotte's life expectancy takes a fatal turn for the worst. Thus Will, who does care for Charlotte, is forced to look within, and really question what Charlotte means to him, and what he has to do to be with her during her final days on Earth. Introspection takes place, and internal structures are strengthened. Charlotte's love paved the way for his inner potential to be realized and his personal growth to take place. He had a child with the woman whom he slept with after Charlottes mother expressed her feelings to him, and never even met her until now.
