Miss Brill"What has happened to me?" A question asked in the story "Miss Brill". The reader can’t help but feel a bit taken in by the charm of Miss Brill. She has a way of talking that almost leads the reader to believe she is dressing for a night out with friends. But, to the readers surprise, she isn’t! Miss Brill is a story of an old woman who has gone so far out of the loop of society that she no longer realizes she is not in it. Many elderly people have a set of rituals to be performed regularly. But Miss Brill’s activities are far from ordinary. She has an interesting way of diagnosing the people she mentally interacts with. By mentally interacting she simply does not talk to them she just feels as though she is a part of the conversation she witnesses. Miss Brill’s ability to stray so far from reality allows the reader to feel many interesting points such as maybe she isn’t crazy at all, what caused her to become this way, or is the reader mea . . .
"Miss Brill" is a somewhat sad story about a woman who interacts with society on her mind. "Miss Brill" is a powerful look at a world few can see but that all people live in. Quite possibly the writer of this story could have been trying to get the reader to acknowledge the odd people she sees by the way Miss Brill reacts to them. Her having a husband is not addressed in the story. It could be that the loss of a loved one possibly her husband could bring her to this point. Often times in stories characters act strangely and when a reader continues on in the story he or she finds that the character has had a life changing incident occur in the past. Reading this story also shows humor because everyone has been guilty of eavesdropping at one time or another. But, Miss Brill is far from a hermit. Considering what made her come to this position is a problem the reader never answers and is left to wonder.

It gives an insightful look at her situation which in turn allows the reader to sympathize with her situation. Or, she could have had past relationships with others and they grew tired of her opinions and left her company. It could be possibly that she used to be a strong person in the community and something brought her down. She acts as though none of the activities she accomplishes in the story are at all odd.
