This combination fence and wall is planned to run more than 200 miles forming a separation barrier between Israel and the West Bank of Palestine. Israel claims this wall is necessary to stop bombings, but is being called an apartheid wall by the Palestinians, and is linked to the aggression and oppression of the Berlin Wall. Palestinians are complaining the wall cuts deep into its land, and many problems are arising, such as the citizens’ troubles: as many as 400,000 Palestinians are harmed by the barrier, as it cuts families off from their villages, jobs, fields, hospitals, and relatives. Also, many Palestinians find themselves in a bizarre no man's land separated from their village by the wall and fence, and enclosed by more fences that cut them off from the Israeli settlements.
. . .
On an early morning, Hanni and his 4-year-old son planted a row of 20 trees between his house and the wall. Another major problem is the impacts these barriers are going to have on the children of the community, such as Hanni’s son. They hoped someday that the trees would grow and block out the sight of the awful wall. I do agree with Hanni when he said the walls need to come down, but that is probably only going to happen when Israel feels that there is finally peace in its land. To get to his own farm, or send his children to school, Hanni has to travel 30 feet to unlock a gate in the fence the Israeli officials constructed. These walls are cutting the people off from their lives, basically, as they must travel farther, and perform additional tasks to get to their required destination.
Opinion
I would have to say that I cannot agree with what Israel is doing to its land, or its people. While actually attempting to protect its citizens from danger, it is actually imposing more threats to them than if there were no fences at all. He is quoted by saying, “Not only do I live in a jail, but I am my own jailor. ” Everyday, Palestinians come to Hanni’s gate and beg him to unlock it so they can go through. While I do feel that this is a drastic move for Israel, they feel that it is the only way to prevent bombings, and to shelter the security of its citizens. On the other side of the wire fence lives an old neighbor of Hanni. example they give of someone living in this no man’s land is of Hanni Omar, whose house is completely enclosed by 25 feet concrete and wire fences.
