             In most tragedies, the title is given to the tragic hero's name, which is why many people have argued that Julius Caesar should really be titled Brutus. Brutus is indeed the tragic hero of this play because when a person who possesses such heroic qualities dies, it is a true tragedy. To fully argue this point, we must first focus on the qualities and definition of all tragic heroes. All tragic heroes must have the following qualities: Loyalty, honor, and courage. A tragic hero must also have one or more tragic flaws, which leads to his demise. . A tragic hero always is a very good person whom the reader likes but has pity for because of his one tragic flaw. In the play, Julius Caesar, these three qualities and the one fatal flaw can be truly recognized in only one of the characters, Brutus, which is why the play should be entitled The Tragedy of Brutus. Throughout the story Brutus stuck to his character and remained a loyal, honorable, courageous, yet extremely naive and idiotic person. Brutus' one flaw, being naive, lead to his death by the end of the play, Caesar, on the other hand, did not have the same characteristics of the tragic hero.
             From the beginning of the play we can see Brutus as a very loyal, honorable, and courageous person. He shows us his loyalty to Rome and its people several times throughout the play and is even willing to die for them. Although we can say he betrayed Caesar and was not being loyal, that would be a false statement. Brutus in fact was never truly on Caesar's side once he began gaining power, he was a friend, but a more loyal friend to Rome and his countrymen, so for killing Caesar he was in fact further proving his loyalty. His only reason for killing Caesar was for the good of Rome and he truly believed that it was the best thing for his state.
