Audrey Hepburn – Rosy or Rose At the beginning of the movie, in the exposition of the plot, we are introduced to the two main characters, Rose (Audrey Hepburn) and Norman (Humphrey Bogart), along with a minor character, the minister who also happens to be Rose’s husband. Hepburn plays a missionary in Africa who, along with her husband, is trying to convert all of the Africans to become Methodist. Critical Essay: Religion and Structural This film, The African Queen, can be critiqued in two ways, under religion and under structural. I f it were Rose and Norman would not be together. Rose is a very strict Methodist and Norman is not specifically a confirmed religion. The soldiers agree and marry them quickly so that they can get on with the sentence. In the film, it is basically religion against no religion. It is also appropriate for the time and setting of the film. The battle is between strictness of beliefs. Norman likes to be able to do whatever he wants and love God in his own personal way. Because of this she begins to fall in love with him. Rose is very strict with her religion, following every rule to a “T” and liking it that way. One of the main conflicts between Rose and Norman is the conflict of their religions. Rose is appalled and is very skeptical of Norman for a while after this. They repair the boat and begin to sail away.
