Michigan House Bill 4293: Not Beneficial to Girl's Athletics
House Bill No. 4293 was brought to the House of Representatives on February 20, 2001 by Representatives Kolb, Hansen, Woodward, Dennis, Gieleghem, Zelenko, Murphy, Lipsey, Waters, Bogardus, Jacobs and Anderson. What House Bill No. 4293 basically says is that if a high school has both a boys' and a girls' athletic team in the same sport the seasons should be held at the same time. If this bill were to be put into effect it would put the girls in the state of Michigan at a disadvantage in comparison with the situation they have now. This is an advantage the girls in Michigan have that helps to compensate for the disadvantages they incur such as weather. So why is it even on table, why is this even an issue? (http://www. Also, by Michigan girls receiving athletic scholarships, it allows some young women to further their education when otherwise they may not have been able to; so this bill not only effects high school athletics, but it has an indirect impact on the state of Michigan as a whole. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**Girls Win! page 2. In girls' basketball, Michigan's girls placed sixth in the nation. html) Although not the basis of high school athletics, the college athletic scholarship has helped many people to better their lives and give them a better chance at a successful life. 4293 is worded like this:"THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: Sec. In a span of twenty-two years, from the 1977-78 seasons through the 1999-2000 season, the participation by females in interscholastic athletics rose by over 40,000 young women (74,239 in 1977-78 to 118,020 in 1999-2000). 4293) Currently the state of Michigan, by conducting the sports seasons as they currently are, is utilizing the facilities available to the best of its ability.
