tv violence
Television violence is a very difficult problem in today's society. Children are watching more and more TV every year. On one hand, parents and some legislators want TV to be much less violent during the prime-viewing slot. On the other hand, TV programmers are in a tough situation. If they cut a lot of the violence out of the shows, many adults may not be interested in watching them. But if they leave the violence in, they will be setting a bad example for the children. It is basically a lose-lose situation. IN Del Reisman's article, "Additional Guidelines for Violence Are Not Called For" and Ernest F. Hollings', "save the Children", opposite opinions on TV violence are given, but Hollings makes a stronger and more convincing argument than Reisman. In Reisman's article, "Additional Guidelines for Violence Are Not Called For", he believes that there is no need for any more provisions to be put on TV violence. He feels that if all violence is taken out of TV shows the quality of the shows will go down. He says, "The only way to significantly reduce violence...is for networks to simply not order series...such as action adven
If there is lower violence on TV, that may lower the violence on the streets and in schools. He thinks that there is no way to stop this so there !should be nothing done to the amount of violence on TV. He uses some good facts and studies to show how children are affected. Reisman believes that violence is a part of society already and that TV violence just mirrors real life. He believes that these are the type of shows that most people enjoy watching and if they were taken off the airwaves, many people would be unhappy. In Hollings' article, "Save the Children", he believes that something should be done to lower television violence. The violence on TV is basically a mirror image of the violence in our lives. He states, "I believe that writers should continue to tell the stories of our time. That is one of the biggest parts of the problems surrounding TV violence and he does not talk about it. That would make the world a better place for everyone. Hollings states, "More than a thousand studies have demonstrated a direct link between exposure to violence in the media and aggressive, violent behavior" (620). This is a great point for the lowering of violence on TV. Television violence does contribute to real violence, but is not s!olely responsible. He believes that without violence on TV, shows would be boring and would not have much variety. There is no way to hide this violence.
