Habitat For Humanity

             Habitat for Humanity is an organization that helps the needy build affordable housing. There are certain requirements to qualify for housing. One is two hundred hours of work, on your own house and your neighbors. I have had two chances to work with Habitat in the Greater Miami area of Homestead, Florida. I went with a Christian youth group and many high school students who shared the same desire to help those in need on our Spring Break.
             The first year I went was with a bunch of seniors from my school. They were the people I looked up to and aspired to be like. As a sophomore, I was a newcomer to the youth group but felt welcomed by the Habitat staff and by the other group members. We stayed at a camp called Camp Freedom where cockroaches and spiders accompanied us in our room and showers. No one on the trip minded though because we were all there for one common goal, to help build the houses.
             The first year, I was fifteen and not old enough to work with power tools by Habitat regulation. But the job we could do was paint, with many others, a couple of houses the days we were working there. The days were long and I felt frustrated many times. I felt like I wasn't making a difference by painting one house. But overall, the trip was enjoyable and I knew that sacrificing my vacation for someone else's benefit was right.
             The second year, my junior year of high school, I decided to return to the Greater Miami area. We stayed at Camp Freedom once again. The only new elements added was snakes in our room, along with the cockroaches and spiders, and rumor that the people who had returned from last year could go back to the houses they worked on the year before and meet the families. This year, I was old enough to work with real tools. Our job was leveling the land and yard work. Basically, we were moving rocks. After a few days, I got really frustrated.
