sparta and athens

Although Athens and Sparta were very different in many respects they were also similar in many ways. Athenian and Spartan societies both relied on slaves for manual labor in the fields and in the construction of temples, both societies believed that in order to develop themselves fully they could not be bothered by such things, Athenians believed that time taken away from the study of philosophy and mathematics was detrimental to the development of ones self. The Spartans believed also that if they were troubled by the chores of everyday life they could not become as good of soldiers as they needed to be, the Athenians believed that such chores would take away from their studies thus not allowing them to be fully developed individuals. Early on the Spartan and Athenian city-states were overpopulated, the way that each society decided to handle the overpopulation is a direct cause of why the two societies developed differently. They decided that Athens would be a free city-state where people were allowed to come and go as they pleased using Athens many ports. Both societies also believed in the importance and the value of individual expression, they felt that every individual has something to offer to the society. The Spartan people and the Athenian people were two of the most influential city-states in all of Greece; many other Greek lands were greatly influenced in their methods of governmental organization and social morals. Athenians used thought to try and solve their problem. While the Athenians developed a democratic society, the Spartans developed a military society; the Spartans believed that it was a great military that m!ade a society great. both societies this was seen as a place for worship and the center for the government and military the Acropolis was also viewed as the center of the town where social g!atherings took place. Sparta had the most powerful military of the Greek city-states, the men of Sparta were trained from the time they were young to be excellent soldiers. Sparta became a very decadent society, they did not have trade outside of Sparta and they! did not allow any outside influences in-order to prevent any uprising or protest about the ways of their society. Athens also developed a system that was of the people, by the people, and for the people, this system of government is also used by United States today. There are a few reasons for the differences in the way the Athenians handled their affairs and the way the Spartans handled theirs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Athenian men on the other hand were educated in the humane arts because the Athenians believed that was the only way to be free, this belief allowed Athens to became the leader of the entire Greek society. Although these powerful city-states were both influential they were also both very different from one another. Sparta on the other hand decided that the best ways to deal with overpopulation were to obtain more land for its citizens and to keep foreigners out.
