Milly
Milly's mind drifted further away, and the surroundings of her bedroom became blurred. Yet again she discovered herself in the same murky room which she found so familiar and yet so confusing. As she lay on the damp stone floor of that murky room, she wondered what lay outside the old building, but as always, she could feel a strong unbearable force pinning her to the ground; as always, Milly's voice silently cried out for help, and as always no sound could be heard other than the occasional shriek of freezing wind which seeped underneath the doorway. Suddenly the wind grew even stronger and seconds later the great oak doors burst open as if hit by lightening; the wood shattered and fell to the ground. The raging wind died in an instant and Milly shifted position as the force pinning her to the ground weakened. After taking a few shaky steps forwards, Milly eventually regained her balance. Her stone-coloured eyes slowly gazed round the room, then with out lingering for longer, she stumbled quickly to the doorway. She absorbed the vision in front of her now, a dull courtyard covered in patches of sparkling snow. Stonewalls which seemed to stretch high up in the air to eternity towered above her, leav
Milly now felt a strong desire to climb up this peculiar tree, from the top she would be able to see around her for miles. Milly's mind flashed images of what seemed like a thousand different memories of her childhood as she fell through the sky. She moved lightly towards the opposite wall surrounding the yard, feeling full of enthusiasm and delight in these peculiar surroundings. Only the first sentence of the post card was legible, Milly read the jet-black sentence aloud, "all is not what it seems". As her grandparents stood next to her bed, they saw her body shake and then finally become still. She looked around; she did not know what to do. Her small hands felt numb as she sat on the snow and as her eyes darted from place to place, she glimpsed something sticking out of the solid wall beside her. Then eventually her body crippled as she hit the stone ground, her mind went blank. The snow was fresh and the winds were fiercely blowing around her, but yet this tree was bare and the bark was crisp and dry. The dark roots of the tree sunk deep into the shimmering snow and the branches were stretched out in poise far above Milly's head. What had happened to her sister? Two weeks ago Milly had been happily playing with her. As she shivered, the gale force winds rose in the air again and she was roughly pushed against a stone balcony in the corner of the ancient looking square. He thought it would be different to the one which had killed his son. "All is not what it seems!" she whispered. Her frozen lips trembled as she dared herself to look over the wall.
