When I was a young child a great ship arrived here. The ship was strange, it was longer than the great trees on our land, and had big fluffy sheets on top. Pale men came ashore while some men of my tribe were fishing. The men dropped their things and ran. They came to our village and told the people to hide because of what they had seen. All the women and children hid in the forest. Our chief sent a few men to greet the pale men. While we were hiding, we heard thunder. Night came, one of our men wandered back to our hiding place covered with red water. Everyone cried; I didn’t know what was happening. He whispered something to the chief, then closed his eyes and never woke up. I had witnessed the first

The pale men did not always act like savages, though. They told us about the many things he could do. More pale people came, and built houses and stayed in our land they were peaceful people. The plan did not work even more of my people died. They were going from house to house causing problems. Later that year a ship crashed; the survivors were taken and made servants in several communities of my people. He seemed to have a lot more manitou (spiritual power) than any of our gods. Later another group came; a man named Sammuel de Champlain led them. My father wanted to go after the men, but our chief did not let him, because he remembered what had happened to the other men. My sister was lying on the floor crying. He gave our people some gifts, but since my people nor his people really trusted each other they left.
