I am a member of the Wampanoag tribe. We live by the great ocean, near the bays. My people lived good lives until the pale men came to stay. I do not know the whole story because I am only twenty years old. My people encountered some strange people who fished, but none of them stayed or caused us any harm. All our problems started about nineteen years ago. A group of pale men with funny coats, eyes like animals, and light hair arrived here in our land and from that day forward life changed for my people.
When I was a young child a great ship arrived here. The ship was strange, it was longer than the great trees on our land, and had big fluffy sheets on top. Pale men came ashore while some men of my tribe were fishing. The men dropped their things and ran. They came to our village and told the people to hide because of what they had seen. All the women and children hid in the forest. Our chief sent a few men to greet the pale men. While we were hiding, we heard thunder. Night came, one of our men wandered back to our hiding place covered with red water. Everyone cried; I didn’t know what was happening. He whispered something to the chief, then closed his eyes and never woke up. I had witnessed the first
. . .
More pale people came, and built houses and stayed in our land they were peaceful people. He gave our people some gifts, but since my people nor his people really trusted each other they left. Later another group came; a man named Sammuel de Champlain led them. My mother ran to get help, but before she left she locked our door and told us to run if the bad men came. Our chief was a very peaceful man, so he helped them. Who knows what lies ahead? We may even be wiped from the face of the earth. A little while later the door was knocked down. Later four of his men were killed, so Gosnold sent another man by the name of Martin Pring to make peace.
The pale men did not always act like savages, though. of many deaths I would see in my life. They were going from house to house causing problems.
