             There is a big debate on whether or not fluoride should be put in the public's drinking water. There are many people who think that it would be a good thing, because it helps prevent cavities. For other people, they do not like the idea because they know of the harm that it could actually do to the human body. Norman Mancuso, Ph.D., and his committee stated, "reached the firm conclusion that the risks of overexposure to fluoride far outweigh any currant benefit of water fluoridation." Fluoride in drinking water can cause discoloration, bone diseases, and decreases annual fertility rate.
             According to a recent study done by the New York State Department of Health, shows that children who live in communities with fluoride in the public water may have more cavities and tooth discoloration than children who drink water without fluoride. The dental records of children from Newburgh, N.Y.- where fluoride has been put in the public drinking water for over 50 years, and Kingston, N.Y.- where there was no fluoride in the water. This study showed that the children from Newburgh actually had slightly more cavities, and dental fluorosis (white or brown mottling of the teeth caused by fluoride), than the children from Kingston.
             High concentrations of fluoride can produce a crippling bone and joint disorder called fluorosis and increases the chances of osteoporosis and hip fractures. In people 65 years and older, there is a positive connection between fluoridation and increased hip fractures. This is based on two studies, one involved 700,000 people, and eight to as much as 40 percent of increased incidence in hip fractures.
