The French princess of the movie who is wedded to the English prince is often shown moving around in a very smooth and graceful manner. The color scheme of this scene is a crisp cool “bluish” tint designed to give the appearance of the cold to the audience. Another aspect to explore is the numerous underlying themes of love that is demonstrated within both films. The men are prepared for combat and the battle commences; the sky is showered with flaming arrows and fire as it rains down upon the opposing army. The slow-motion style of filming is used here to show emphasis on individual actions just as they are about to take place. The color scheme is a pale soft blue and black, with a warm yellow glow from a nearby fire. The camera takes wide pan-shots and deep shots to show the oncoming Roman legion, with a very colorful display of overhead arrows and fire as they advance toward the main front.

In Braveheart the first battle with England’s Northern Army and the Scottish volunteers, takes place on a wide open plain with green grass and blue skies. Both movies use the technique to show dramatization, but Braveheart uses it as “the calm before the storm” approach, rather than an emphasis on an individual’s ability. He takes her out on a horseback ride with the landscape of the flush green rolling hills of Scotland. She does this in order to spare the life of her outraged husband. The camera is placed so the arrows and fire that rain above are shown passing over the camera and continues to follow their path to where they find their marks. It is interesting to see how little body language and footage is used to show the feelings of emotion and love that the characters have towards each other in Gladiator. This distant appearance of affection leaves the audience with a feeling of respect and admiration for Maximus and his followers. As expressed earlier, the death of Wallace’s wife sparked William Wallace to take arms against the English.
