I Stand Here Ironing

Parents tend to focus more on material

possessions rather than emotional feelings, which

can cause giving children less familiar attention

than they require. Many children suffer from low

self-esteem and the inability to share their

feelings because of not receiving enough emotional

support from their parent(s). Children who lack

emotional support reluctantly tends to hide their

feelings and are not able to get close to other

I Stand Here Ironing, by Tillie Olsen, begins

with a mother who is struggling in life and has a

lot of obligations to fulfill. "I stand here

ironing and what you asked me moves tormented back

and forth with the iron." This quote means even

while the mother is busy she still thinks about her

children and the comments they make. "I wish you

would manage the time to come in and talk-"; The

mother really does care about her children, but she

just doesn't know how to show her love and worry

about all the chores and obligations she has. "She

was eight months old I had to leave her daytime's",

"Emily's father, who could no longer endure." The

mother is having a hard time because her husband

"I knew the teacher that was evil," Emily

always has a reason to stay home. Emily has a low self-esteem and

You may use this paper how every you want. In the story, I Stand Here Ironing,

the author, Tillie Olsen, shows several examples of

how the lack of love and support affected Emily's

life. "She fretted about her

appearance"; Emily doesn't not look like Susan or

her mother which makes her feel she is not part of

the family. "It took a

long time to raise the money for her fare back.

As shown in the examples I have given in the

above paragraphs, Emily lacked emotional support as

a young girl.

When Emily's mother is pregnant with Susan,

Emily becomes sick with red measles. "Aren't you ever

going to finish the ironing, Mother?", when Emily

says this to her mother she is saying don't you

have something to do; because her mother never had

time for her when she was little why would she have

time now? At the end of the story, Emily and her

mother seem to come to some sort of agreement, so

that they are getting along better. Since Emily is not a part of

Susan's life, she feels neglected and not part of

the family.

Since Emily felt she was given up her emotional

state is very low and she doesn't have a lot to do

with her mother. The social workers are involved in Emily's

life because Emily's mother is not a fit mother;

the social workers are just making sure Emily has

the best care possible. Her reason for

staying home is not because the teacher is "evil",

but because she wants her mom to spend time with

her.
