In the award winning novel, The Catcher In The Rye, author J. D. Salinger shows the phoniness of 1950’s society through the character of a young boy named Holden Caulfield. Holden Caulfield is an intelligent and bright, sixteen year old boy who attends Pency Prepatory School. However due to his troubled mind and overall character he fails out of school and begins to wander the streets of New York. Through Holden’s wanderings, Salinger shows his readers the phoniness of society, such as educational institutions, Hollywood, and Catholicism. Furthermore even though Salinger uses his novel to show the phoniness of 1950’s society, he can also very well use his novel to illustrate the phoniness of today’s society.
             Through J. D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher In The Rye, you can note the phoniness of educational institutions in the 1950’s society and relate it to today’s schools and universities. For example when Holden say, “I’ll bet a thousand bucks the reason they did that was because a lot of guys’ parents came up to school on Sunday, and old Thurmer probably figured everybody’s mother would ask their darling boy what he had for dinner last night, and he’d say, “Steak,”” (pg 35), he inverse that his school really doesn’t care about what they eat just only what their parents think about the school. Moreover in today’s society you can see phoniness in the Chicago Public Schools. For instance in my own school Lane Tech the principal, Mr. Foley says that when entering the building in the morning students must go through the metal detectors in order for every one to be safe. However he really does not care ab!
             out the students safety, only meeting the CPS board minimum security requirements because later on in the day students can enter the building, after their lunch without walking through the metal detectors
