Who is to blame for Romeo and Juliet

Who is to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet?

After reading the play Romeo and Juliet I found it very hard to acclaim the blame of Romeo and Juliet’s death to a particular character. Every character in my opinion have a part to play in their deaths, you cannot direct the blame on one particular person. Everybody shares the blame.

In the beginning of the play both families, the Capulet and Montague are at war with each other and the reason for this is unknown to anyone, all we know is that it had begun a very long time ago and this can be seen in Act I’s prologue from line 3

From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,

This proves that the feud had been going on for a long time and that it had a big part to play in the deaths of the children because if there was no war between the families then Romeo and Juliet would have been able to marry in peace. There would have been no need for a secret wedding because they would both have blessings from their families to go ahead with the wedding, but as the story has it they didn’t.

The Capulet family can be blamed again because they were forcing Juliet to marry someone else who was Paris, this can be seen in Act III scene V line 154 -155.

. . .

Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe:

A villain that is hither come in spite,

To scorn at our solemnity this night. This can be seen in Act I scene V lines 53 – 54 and also lines 60 – 62. This can be seen in Act V Scene II line 5 -12. And it was how the stars intended it to happen because in the play there are a few lines were the stars are mentioned for example, Act I’s prologue line VI “Star-crossed lovers” . As a priest he is meant to always do what is right and when people are doing what is right they don’t do it in secret instead they do it in the open, which proves that what he was doing wasn’t right, but it could be said that he wanted both children to get married in other for both families to unite but it didn’t work.

This, by his voice, should be a Montague.

I think it best you married with the county.

Going to find a barefoot brother out,

One of our order, to associate me…

Sealed up the doors, and would not let us forth,

So that my speed to Mantua there was stayed.

If Tybalt had not picked a fight with Romeo, then mercutio would not have died, Romeo would not have been banished and probably would have not taken the potion.

Then hie you hence to Friar Laurence' cell;

there stays a husband to make you a wife:

Here the nurse tells Juliet the news of Romeo wanting to marry her bur she could also have told Juliet the consequences of going through with it. ris to Saint Peter’s church,

Or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither.

Another person to blame is Friar John because instead of him delivering Friar Lawrence’s letter to Romeo straight away he delayed, saying that he was seeking another Franciscan friar to accompany him to Mantua in order to deliver the letter to Romeo. Another reason I would blame the priest is because he gave Juliet a potion to deceive her family that she was dead and has a priest deceiving people is not acceptable. he’s a lovely gentleman!

Romeo’s a dishclout to him.
