The story starts off with the death of Beethoven and his funeral. Soon after, his only living brother and his manager, Schindler, are shown fighting over his will. This is where the story begins. Th movie is written in continual flashbacks of Beethoven’s life as his manager travels to everywhere Beethoven has lived and questions all his lover’s.
After the argument with Beethoven’s brother he soon takes a carriage to the Swan Hotel in Carlsbad. He is searching for a lead woman is. The desk clerk agrees to speak with him about Beethoven'’ stay at the hotel. She tells him a story of when a woman dressed in black stayed there and was waiting for Beethoven. Schindler leaves Carlsbad to travel to the Von Gallenburg residence in Vienna. She regrettably informs him that she is not the one. He is enraged and leaves at once feeling that they have toyed with his emotions.

Then the flashback goes into the present where Schindler is still interviewing the countess. She says that they met at a recital that Beethoven would be at.
He then asks the countess, are you the one, are you his immortal beloved? He shows her a letter that was found with his will stating he is giving all his fortune and music to this woman.
