Abnormal Psychology Diagnosis
I spoke with my uncle for the past two weekends when I went home, whom I will call participant for the duration of the paper. He has been very depressed lately. He spoke to me for about an hour and I asked him what was wrong and why he seemed so down. Well, he stated to me that he just was feeling very well lately and that he was going to die soon. He does not have any disease or medical problem that would support this. He told me that he was a hundred years old and he didn't have much longer. The participant is 45 years old and his responses were not a joke. He told me that he had been feeling depressed almost every day lately. He also has also gone through these stages of feeling down for more than two years through my own observation
This is the beginning criterion for Dysthymia. The participant does not meet this criterion. So in conclusion I would have to say that although there are symptoms such as the participants complaints of not being able to sleep and no feeling very well and signs that he told me his doctor said he observed that fit some of the criteria for dysthymia such as depressed mood for more days than not for at least two years, overeating, insomnia, low energy, and feeling low, I would have to say that his schizophrenia is the sole cause to these ailments. Therefore my diagnosis would not be dysthymia. This is another one of the symptoms, which are needed to fit the criteria for Dysthymia. He also shows symptoms of distress and impairment but once again he does not meet the full criteria for dysthymia. I also can say that an observation or sign of dysthymia that I have seen over the years is his overeating. He was meeting at least three of them. The participant is a paranoid schizophrenic and he goes through these stages as the course of his disorder takes place. As for a manic episode, I have never personally seen one with my uncle. I asked him while he was depressed how he felt. He told me, that he feels this way quite often. Now, two or more of the following symptoms are need for one of the criteria for the disorder; Poor appetite or overeating, insomnia or hypersomnia, Low energy or fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration and difficultly decision making, and feelings of hopelessness. So although the participant does meet most of the criteria for Dysthymia, I would have to say that his depression that comes and goes is caused by his schizophrenia.
