I spoke with my uncle for the past two weekends when I went home, whom I will
call participant for the duration of the paper. He has been very depressed lately. He
spoke to me for about an hour and I asked him what was wrong and why he seemed so
down. Well, he stated to me that he just was feeling very well lately and that he was
going to die soon. He does not have any disease or medical problem that would support
this. He told me that he was a hundred years old and he didn't have much longer. The
participant is 45 years old and his responses were not a joke. He told me that he had been
feeling depressed almost every day lately. He also has also gone through these stages of
feeling down for more than two years through my own observations. This is the
beginning criterion for Dysthymia. I asked him while he was depressed how he felt. He
told me he couldn't sleep and he was feeling fatigued lately, these are symptoms or
subjective complaints. I also can say that an observation or sign of dysthymia that I have
seen over the years is his overeating. Now, two or more of the following symptoms are
need for one of the criteria for the disorder; Poor appetite or overeating, insomnia or
hypersomnia, Low energy or fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration and difficultly
decision making, and feelings of hopelessness. He was meeting at least three of them.
He has had these symptoms for a long time and I cannot say if he has never been without
these symptoms for more than two months at a time. He told me, that he feels this way
quite often. As for a manic episode, I have never personally seen one with my uncle.
This is another one of the symptoms, which are needed to fit the criteria for Dysthymia.
