Give Me something for the pain

I was lying on a long, cold, uncomfortable stretcher being shoved in the back of an ambulance, and then the paramedics slammed the doors behind me. All I could see was the big doors of the ambulance, the wires and tubes going everywhere throughout the ambulance, and the paramedic trying to calm me down so he could stick a needle in my arm to give me something for the pain. Just think, only a few minutes ago all I could think about was the football game. My adrenaline was pumping, and I never could have imagined that this is where I would be.

Sometime in mid October on a Cold night in Midlothian, just about 20 minutes south of Dallas, I was in Don Floy Memorial stadium about to play a regular old conference football game, or so I thought. For a small town, we always had a good turn out, but that was expected because in Texas, high school football is a big thing. The crowd was so loud that I could barely call the play in the defensive huddle, and the band playing the usual go fight win song that I think every high school band plays didn’t help matters much. We were playing the Waco University Trojans, and it was our first district game. There was two minutes left on the clock in the second quarter. Waco had the ball on our 40-yard

. . .

The quarterback came up to the line and put his hands under the center, “ Red 64! Blue 31! Hut hut!,” yelled waco's quarterback, and the center snapped him the ball. once coach Cox got my cleats and socks off, the paramedics stabilized my leg and put me on a stretcher. When he did, his face went white, and he started yelling for the trainer. In a passing situation, I am supposed to cover the tight end, who just happened to be running right in my direction. You hear about people getting hurt and not feeling it untill they realize the significance of their injury. My primary objective at linebacker was to look for the run, but the quarterback dropped straight back looking for a player to throw to. Only a minute or two had gone by, and my leg was already black and blue all over. That is when I told him to look at my leg. By this time I was hysterical and started yelling for someone to help me. In fact he told me I might have a slight limp for two to three years, but I worked with my trainer and worked really hard to get back to full strength. I made it about 15 yards down the field, to about the 50-yard line, and was suddenly tripped from behind. It was not even connected to my leg except by a thin layer of skin. We lined up waiting for the offense to come out of the huddle. When I did, I was shocked to see that the ball of my ankle was on the side of my right leg and was almost protruding out of the skin.
