Behind the Music, Behind the Beat

Many won’t realize that the art of drumming and its history are richer and more colorful than any painting of a flower garden ever painted. Unique drums can be found in all cultures of the world. They are and have been used for many different purposes, such as accompanying music and dance, communicating with neighboring communities, and facilitating ceremonies and rituals. They’ve been around for eons and eons.

The drum set was created here in the United States., much in the same way the United States was created. Unique sounding drums from various cultures around the world were combined into creating one new instrument. This instrument, that’s considered loud and annoying just by itself by many, can actually be the only instrument that symbolizes peace, how ironic is that.

A basic drum set is consisted of 5 drums: There is the Kick Bass drum which is the lowest pitched and the biggest drum, the Snare drum which is a much higher pitched drum and it makes a sound like an artist makes when tapping his big hairy brush on the canvas

. . .

The more you master the principals the less limited you are with your abilities. No one has taught me the basics of Drum Theory but they are things that I’ve picked up as I grew as a drummer.

Coordination is the first key factor in the concept. This allows the drummer to add as much spice as the beat lacks by being flexible and creative. Ever since then, drumming has been structured on three principals: Technique, Coordination, and Independence. They fail to realize that there is actually a meaning to Drum Theory and the principals in which they can benefit from. The only limit would be the imagination and creativity. It is very important because beats are formed on the coordination of sounds.

Independence is the last of the key factors. This concept is taken much deeper by many drummers when they want to create independence between all four of their ‘hands’ in order to be limitless with their flexibility. They focus only on developing drumming speed and not an understanding of technique and the concept of drumming.

If a drummer masters these three principals, that person can have complete and perfect control of whatever beat patterns or ideas that comes to mind.

There are too many ignorant drummers who do nothing but beat the sounding soul out of their drums and at the same time beat up and make a botch of any reputation drummers still may have left.

I’ve been fortunate enough as a drummer to discover all three of them but I have met too many drummers that lack a least one of them and therefore they limit themselves by failing to stand on all three principals.
