Help the Children A child walks home from school. He arrives at home and slowly opens the door. He creeps silently through the house and quietly closes his bedroom door behind him. There he sits and waits for the inevitable. His stomach is in knots and every bone in his body is filled with fear. The boy's fear, an angry two hundred-pound man who finds pleasure in hurting this boy. Normally such a man would be immediately locked up, but this just happens to be the man he calls dad. Now everyday the boy waits in fear. Maybe it won't happen today but sooner or later it will happen again, and it is going to hurt. So now everyday this boy carries the pain both in his heart and in the marks across his back. He wonders why he is such a bad person, why does he make his father do this to him? Is this any way for a child to grow up? Unfortunately it happens everyday, in every country, in every state, in every city and in every school district. A neglected child may also show signs of malnutrition. Between 85 and 90 percent of sexual abuse happens by someone that the child knows. The average sex offender is involved with over 70 children throughout their life. There are many behavioral indicators that a child is being sexually abused. The physical indicators are difficulty walking or sitting. The behavioral indicators are that the child makes negative statements about itself. Of course the child may be left unsupervised or alone for long periods of time. They may restrict play activities or experiences. They are inappropriately aggressive or destructive to others. Neglected! children sometimes cry easily, even when hurt slightly, to try and get attention. Emotional abuse is often thought of as the least severe of the different types of abuse but it leaves a long lasting imprint on a person's personality. Forty-five out of 1,000 children were reported as abused or neglected in 1998. Long term studies of low achievers, runaways, drug abusers, prostitutes and incarcerated individual show that abuse is a consistent element in their backgrounds. Sexual abuse is probably the most damaging to a child's mental deve!lopment. So what can you do if you suspect that a child is being abused? Call child protective services.
