The movie was filmed on location at Elsinore Castle in Denmark, the actual castle mentioned in Hamlet. Gibson was a superb choice for the play of Hamlet because he adds depth and uses appropriate emotion. Shakespeare would have altered sections of his play to make it transition into other scenes easier.
While Zefirelli’s version does not adhere to the text in some places, Shakespeare’s vision was recreated in this film. The Zefirelli version of Hamlet contains incredible performances by Alan Bates who plays the villainous King, and while he has no standout scenes, his performance is solid overall.
