a lesson to learn

The poem “THE Ex-Basketball Player” written by John Updike is a study into the life of a guy named Flick, who has grown up to pump gasoline at Berth’s Garage. Flick’s high school days were filled with success as a player. The writer of the poem seems that Flick has wasted his potential; however, Flick himself seems to be quite content with his life. Many times those who observe from the outside feel that a person should achieve more then he or she actually does, but only the person themselves know whether or not they are happy with their lot in life.

Flick’s high school days were filled with success as a player. He still holds the record for most points in a game with three hundred and ninety points they say. The author

. . .
The author uses different figures of speech throughout the poem. He hardly missed a shot he was one of the town’s heroes.

In conclusion I think the speaker in this poem might be somebody who has grown up with flick. It doesn’t matter what we think about people’s life but if they are content with what the good lord has given them. To him it does not matter what everybody else thinks so I think this can teach us all a lesson about judging people. When he gets off work he heads down to Mae’s luncheonette where he plays pinball and his tiny cigars. says he “saw him rack up thirty-eight or forty in one home game”. The author says that his hands were like wild birds.

Metaphors that describe to us how flick was, such as “Flick stands tall among the idiot pumps”, “the ball loved Flick”, “grease gray and kind of coiled” and “beyond her face toward bright applauding tiers”. The author feels Flick has wasted his talents and kind of has a negative attitude toward him. He enjoys his job as a gas station attendant and loves to reflect on his old high school days. All the kids remember how good he was and I guess he is content with that.

. The author also uses similes that describe Flick such as, “his hands were like wild birds” These figures of speech describe to us as readers different aspects of the story. Flick led a boring life according to most people but to him he liked what cards he was delt in life.
