Organizational Diversity

             The element of diversity exists in all organizations, and presents a major problem in most. Discrimination is a characteristic of American society and business that cannot be ignored. The major attitude is that the recent developments to reduce discrimination have had huge effects on the problem of diversity in the work place. Unfortunately, this is a false assumption; the facts of discrimination are still very prevalent despite recent efforts for equality. As always, the Anglo male still dominates the business hierarchies, and women and minorities still cling to lower level management with less probability of moving up in the hierarchy (P. 351). The assumption that situations for females and minorities are getting better may be false in all essence. Recent studies have even shown that while women are gaining more positions in upper level management, the percentage by which they grow is still consistent with the growth of twenty years ago (P. 354).              se upper level positions are being filled by more and more women doesn't really mean that they are gaining on men, but that they are keeping up with men; not exactly what should be the outcome of efforts concerning equality among men, women, or minorities.
             The problem that diversity can cause is easy to see. Sadly, people do not treat fellow employees or students the same. They base their interactions with people according to what color or gender they may be, and usually in a negative way. This can obviously create a problem concerning the communication within an organization, and restrict the efficiency of the organization. This can be seen even here on the Alma College campus with the recent threat to an African American professor by one of his students concerning a grade; but even on a more daily basis with the visible separation among students according to race and gender during meals, walks to class, and very strong bonded cliques that have become...
