underage drinking
I wake up on the couch with an empty feeling in my stomach. "Who kicked me in the stomach, and how the hell did I end up here," I remark to myself. Then I recall the beginning of last night, the partying, the dancing, and most of all the drinking. How much had I actually consumed? I lost count some where between margarita time and beer-thirty. As I wipe the sleep from my fuzzy eyes I notice an empty bottle of Smirnoff Vodka and a pool of vomit on the floor beside the couch. "Oh God, what happened," I shuddered at the grim fact that I had vomited at some point in my all-to-peaceful slumber of the night before. This ran a chill down my spine. I could have easily ended up like countless other college students and rock stars who have died of asphyxiation on their own vomit, after a night of "fun." Why do I put myself though this every weekend? I have no real explanation. Is one night of "fun" worth an eternal sleep? However, this scene is not uncommon among the youth of America today. Heavy drinking is especially common among college students. "Drinking plays a definite, in fact almost a primary role in the social life of some students in college" (1 maddox 185). Connecticut: College and University Press, 1970. We live in a world where people ingest poison into their bodies in order to achieve a few hours of artificial bliss. This can lead to divorces and broken homes in future of that particular alcoholic. New Jersey: Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies, 1964. However, hard alcohol cannot be advertised on television, but this does not restrict them to hawking their filth in popular magazines that are view by millions of readers each day. Beer and Liquor are often the drug of choice among the youth of America. Some students can control their drinking, but most cannot. "This is the first time since Kindergarten that these individuals have been in an environment where they do not already have a built-in group of friends" (2 Maddox 50). College is the perfect environment for such experiments. In a perfect world alcohol would only be used for celebrations and special occasions. Society accepts alcohol because it is legal and because most of society is addicted to alcohol in some form as well. They want to be accepted and liked by everyone they meet. I would often wonder, "why can he do it and I can't?" This creates curiosity in the child's impressionable mind.
