Special Education

This article deals with the topic of special education and the things that are associated with special education. The main qualification of a special education student is a 16 point discrepancy between an ability test (IQ) and achievement test. The article mentions that students who have a low IQ are harder to qualify for special education noting that students in this situation are probably giving you all that they have to give. Another important issue involved in special education is with regard to timelines. Items such as paperwork and evaluations must be turned in on certain days when dealing with special education students. The regular education teacher has a large role in the special education process. For example, in an ARD meeting, a regular education teacher must discuss the child's daily functions, testing, and modifications as well as make placement recommendations, assess s

More times than not, if a teacher has a heart for the students, then that teacher will take the time that is needed to ensure that child's success in the classroom (and probably for life). I firmly believe that it takes all of the people involved working hard to ensure the success of children who are involved in special education and are having difficulties in the classroom of any kind. Also, the regular education teacher must be able to give documented information for students that are being monitored, assist in the development of the IEP and report significant health information of the children involved. The regular education teacher must also present information regarding grades, attendance, behaviors and progress of the child. Again, these are a lot of things to ask of any teacher, but they must be done to ensure that children are getting back on the right track and to where they need to be headed. If a teacher is not doing all of the things he/she can or is supposed to be doing, then that child is not getting the kind of help he/she deserves and probably desperately needs. The main thing I take from reading this article is that the regular education teacher has one of the biggest roles to fulfill in the special education process. The article later goes on to mention in detail what can be done if a student has a particular difficulty in class, and how to identify some academic learning difficulties, communication disorders and perceptual disorders as well. The success that can be obtained through the special education program can build up success for the children involved with the goal and intent that these children can become active learners, just as much so as the regular education students. trengths and weaknesses and coordinate with the special education teacher. One of the biggest things that hit me while I was reading this article was the quote, "it's what you make of it". The hope of the state of Texas (as well as every other state) is that children involved in the special education program is able to get the same education as every other child (who has higher learning abilities) can obtain and that these students can find success in the program, as to include these kids at every possible opportunity that regular education teachers can provide for them. This is a lot to work for the regular education teacher to handle on top of all the other duties the teacher must fulfill. In order to be a success, the teacher needs to be an active participant, and have the proper attitude.
