cruciable
In Arthur Miller's historically-based play, The Crucible, a town is torn apart over the issue of witchcraft. Suspicion of "demonic influences" arise when Reverend Parris discovers his daughter, Betty, with a number of other girls dancing naked in the woods. Abigail Williams, one of the girls, claimed that they were simply dancing. However, many of the adults failed to believe her; they were convinced the girl's behavior had to do with witchcraft. When accused, the girls became scared and confessed. When pressed, they pointed the finger at other townspeople, claiming they were forced into witchcraft by other's demonic influences. Abigail Williams, one of the main characters, is most likely to be considered the play's villain. Her accusations led to the deaths of (most likely) innocent victims.
Abby is described as a very beautiful, yet vain, teenager. Accusations started flying, and the accused were sent to trial immediately. Arthur Miller portrays her without any sympathy, simply as the villain. Suddenly, Abby had control of not only her own life, but the lives of everyone around her. After this, Abby was forced to move in with her uncle's family. Proctor was dead, Abby believed that she would be able to marry John. Her closest relative, an uncle, was Salem's controversial preacher, Reverend Parris. After she left, John refused to carry on the relationship. Elizabeth, John's wife, had enough evidence to lead her to believe that her husband was having an affair with Abigail. This tumultuous, out of control event from her childhood led her into some troubled situations. Since The Crucible was based on a true story, Abigail Williams is believable, but her ability to be so manipulative and cruel is unbelievable. Proctor, understandably, demanded that Abigail leave. She used this power to condemn local townspeople to death by accusing those who had betrayed, offended, and/or simply disturbed her in some way. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**.
