Hampton at a glance
As I walk about the campus each day and observe the different sites and interactions of the people, it amazes me how we are so different, but yet many of us are the same. I watch as we transfer from class to class, the scenery at the cafe on the inside as well as outside, the student grill, and the Chapel on Sunday. These are very interesting places to observe because you have so many different personalities and ideas uniting as one. And all of this takes place on the campus of Hampton University. Each day, many of us scramble from class to class looking like little ants running about lost. Then there is time spent front the Science and Technology building and the lobby of MLK and Buckman in between classes. In front of the Science & Technology is majority upperclassmen having their bonding time since many of them do not live on campus anyway. They all post up on the walls whether it is cold or hot and just chill and talk. Some play around hitting and chasing each other; while others show each other love by hugging one another and expressing themselves. Then you have the lobby of MLK and Buckman where everyone chills in between classes. This is the one of the main spots in between the ten minute break session before eac
They know black people like rhyt!hm and something they can move to and get the spirit. So you have to be ready when it is coming your way. Then you know the AKA's are around because you hear there little "skee-wee" and then you see the little gesture with their pinkies, and you know they have arrived. So here on campus everyone sounds different and we have tendencies to tease one another for not sounding the same. Overall, the chapel has a service which I believe that has been made appealing for the students which is good, but not all of us like the quick preacher sermon. But still, you have the gathering in the MLK and Buckman lobby. After everyone is gone it is complete silence again, maybe one or two voices speaking. Last but not least, is my observation of the Chapel on Sundays. Finally, you pick up your cups and proceed to get yourself something to drink. At the same time while we are mocking each other's accents we are surely adapting some of the others terms and sayings. The choir sucks and the preacher does not preach until the end of the service for about fifteen minutes. Then they station themselves on their big little smiley face by the cafeteria and continue with their sisterly bonding time. Once the ten minute session is up, you hear everyone scrambling trying to get to class. Across from the hot line you have the fast food line where they serve the same old french fries, pizza, and nasty hamburgers everyday (it's very seldom that I step foot in that line). Here when you walk in you smell the aroma of a Grill at work and here you are not being fooled like at the cafeteria.
