Comparing Grendel and Hitler
Composed in Anglo-Saxon England, the epic poem "Beowulf" deals with the adventures of a hero battling the forces of evil in the world. The monsters in "Beowulf" personify this evil. The universal literary theme of good vs. evil, found in many epic poems, climates in the various battles between Beowulf and the monsters. While the monster Grendel represents evil in the Anglo-Saxon tale, a human being, Adolf Hitler has become synonymous with evil in the 20th century. In fact, Hitler is often referred to as a "monster". In this paper, I will compare Hitler to Grendel, illustrating the similarities between them, and why it may be fitting for each to be a symbol of evil in their respective eras.In Beowulf, Grendel is a ruthless monster in the world, who is incapable of personal friendship and kills humans out of hate.Grendel 1-2: A powerful monster, living down in the darkness growled in pain, impatient.Grendel18-21: and made his home in a hell not hell but earth. He was spawned in that slime, conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain. These passages show how Grendel is not only incapable of friendship because of his living conditions, but also because he was a descendent of Cain. Because of Grendel's ancestors
As I think to myself, if there are still people in the world who are as evil as this, society could not have progressed very much. Grendel looked at humans and saw something of less value than himself. The only time when Hitler was cast out society by the peoples was at the end of the war and before he was actually cast out, he killed himself. He was spawned in that slime conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by god, punished forever for the crime of Abel's death. Hitler shows how he feels superior by his actions. Hitler looked at his fellow humans as mere bricks in the world he wished to erect. It may not be a good thing, but for some reason it always seems to be the evil monsters, that kill five million people, who are remembered as a well-known person. Hitler used people; he used the Germans to make him a political leader in the world, he used the nazi soldiers to enforce the evil actions which he planed out, and he used the Jewish people as his puppets which he could attack and kill any time he wanted. It was not because of anything he did, but since he descended from Cain, he was guilty by association. Because of all the people who Grendel had killed and the fear he put on Herot, he became very notorious. The passage shows how not only did the tails of Grendel go every where by land and sea, but also the people who heard the tails became afraid to even travel near Herot. Also he did not want to stop, he did it all out of hate and he was "seeking no settlement". Both became notorious for their horrible actions. The war ended in 1945 when all of Germany was over run by allied forces.
