Greeks were also overly romanticized for their political insight. Sophocles, the father of Greek drama, really took advantage of this. Our society likes to think of the Greeks as intellectual and sophisticated leaders who were the forerunners of today’s civilization.
Although these are many steps that the Greeks took towards achievement, these are the steps that can be overly romanticized.
Political ideas of liberty and equality were brought into Greek society. Humanist beliefs stress the importance of the individual, uniqueness of the individual, talents of the individual, and the beauty of the body. Although it is obvious that Greek drama and art have had a positive impact on our modern culture, I don’t think that it is safe to say that they are the very reason that we have art and drama today. His beliefs, actually the basics of communism would be shot down if he was to boast them in today’s time. Our modern culture would not stand for this. This is where Greeks began the beliefs of humanism, which takes God out and stresses human power. The fact is the Greeks were arrogant, power-hungry barbarians, waiting to destroy the other city-states and conquer the world. Up until the Renaissance, there was no general appreciation for drama and art. Even though Greeks were very advanced for their day in age, their civilization was far from ideal.
