"What's eating Gilbert Grape"

“Say thank you Gilbert, say thank you.” Gilbert does indeed have a lot to be

thankful to Becky for. In Lasse Hallstrom’s ‘What’s eating Gilbert Grape?’ we see a

range of production techniques used to show us just where and why Gilbert is thankful

for and some of them are: the way Becky built up Gilbert’s self esteem, made Gilbert feel

that he could go anywhere and meliorate his relationship with his corpulent mother.

When we first saw Gilbert we observed that Gilbert is a very demure person, the

fact that he says nothing much about him when he is introducing his entire family

members proves this. But as the movie progress and the interaction between Gilbert and

Becky intensify, we see Gilbert as a new person, a person with much more self-esteem.

The relationship he has with Becky is what brought Gilbert to be a more conceit person,

as they were talking in one of the many scenes they have with each other, Becky asks

him: “What do you want for yourself?” before Gilbert answers, he takes a while to think

what he wants for himself and that is significant because Becky has made Gilbert

contemplate something for himself instead of things for others. As Gilbert answered the

. . .

As they were burning the family house, the color

of the burning flames, the soothing music and the calm faces of each family suggest that

they are very sad, but happy that people didn’t make fun of her and now she can finally

rest in peace. When Becky beckons Gilbert

to enter the water when Arnie won’t, Gilbert declined the offer but Becky was keen to

pursue Gilbert into the water and before much time Gilbert was in the water with Becky. Overall I can see why this film won so many awards; its

clever use of repetition is amazing and the casting of characters is perfect, though not

many people (teenagers) would consider it a good film I think as times passes it will be

remembered as a masterpiece. One of the most important scene

that’s in the film involving the two is the scene where the sun is setting and the two are

talking, not only is the ‘rose colored’ sunset at the background an breath taking

experience for both of them but this is the first time that we see Gilbert smiles and that’s

all thanks to Becky’s simple pleasure in life.

The reason this film is such a success is the way it repeat its important themes,

one of them is the fact that’s haunting Gilbert and that is he is never going to leave

Endora and go anywhere but once again Becky showed him that he can do anything as

long as he set his heart to it. Finally the main scene that Becky made Gilbert feel like he could go

anywhere was at the end of the film, when all the family members split up Amy (older

sister) asked Gilbert where is he and Arnie going, he just simply replied: “We can go

anywhere we want. After a bit of encouragement from Gilbert, she finally

agreed to meet Becky, “I haven’t always been like this.

This is a key metaphor for Gilbert though he doesn’t realize it, but when he got into the

water it proved that he do anything as long as want it to and Becky was again the

aspiration. Another scene that Becky

started to helped Gilbert to go somewhere is near the pond. When Gilbert was invited to Becky’s caravan (he was spying

on her and got caught), he met Becky’s grandmother who was a bit like him at one stage. amera angle changes, instead of a normal shoot of Gilbert the camera kind

of focused in on Gilbert and looking down on him, the reason for this shot is probably to

show that Gilbert is thinking carefully what to say.

. When he bowed his head the camera showed

his discomfort among the three (two of which has been places), this is very meaningful

because it showed a close up view that he was embarrassed.

After they got talking Gilbert bowed his head in contrast to all the places she’s been to

and started to feel awkward because he remembered that he could never go anywhere but

Becky replied that Endora is good has any.

There is no doubt that Becky is a catalyst for change in Gilbert’s life and that is

all proven from the changes she made when she got to Endora, the way she built up

Gilbert’s self esteem, improved his relationship with his mother and made him feel like

going anywhere is a fine example of whom she is.
