In Swift's essay "A Modest Proposal," he gives a

picture of how life in Ireland was for the Irish tenants

who were mistreated by the British landlords. "A Modest

Proposal" forces the reader to read beyond the text and

find the hidden meanings that lie in the words. Swift's

use of satire allows him to wear the masks of an

accountant, a breeder, and a politician throughout the

story. By Swift changing masks so quickly, the readers are

able to form their own theories as to what he is trying to

develop and also is able to not come right out and say what

he believes. Swift's ideas are ridiculous, but create for

the reader some awareness as to how oppressed the Irish

An important aspect to Jonathan Swift's satire is that

he has the ability to change masks quickly without the

reader recognizing the change. Swift presents himself to

the reader as a compassionate person who is able to

understand his surroundings. Swift has a feeling of

remorse for the mothers that have to beg for money so they

can support their babies. Swift displays his sensitivity

. . .

Swift as a politician allows him to

search for methods in establishing his theory for what the

children of Ireland should be used for.

This mask allowed the reader to see that the main problem

for the Irish was money. This rapid change of

masks from two completely different angles forces the

reader to read deeper in to the literature. Readers were able to understand the views

Swift presented by identifying what the masks were.

Swift takes on the mask as an accountant to show how

financially effective it would be to feed off of their

young.

In this paragraph, Swift offers his proposal to the

British.

.

Swift uses one of his next masks to allow the reader

to get an agriculturist view on the food situation in

Ireland. Swift is able to sound like a patriot

of his country by hiding behind the compassionate mask. Swift believed that some action had

to be taken early if the Irish were to come up with a

solution to the problems they were facing.

Swift however, does give his own views without the use

of a mask.

Swift takes the political angle in his next paragraph

to allow the reader to get a completely different

perspective and also to catch the reader off guard. Swift makes an attempt to take the responsibility

for the malnutrition that is taking place with the children

of Ireland. Swift's use of words allows

the reader to comprehend exactly what Swift is feeling. Swift's best display of satire comes when he says

"Therefore very proper for landlords, who, as they have

already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best

title for the children"(634).
