The play Loot

Joe Orton writes the play, Loot. While awaiting a burial, the poor late Mrs. McLeavy is removed from her coffin so that her devious son and his crony can hide a sum of stolen money. In summation, Loot, can be thought of as a definite dark comedy.

This play deals with the power of money and what it will make people do. McLeavy, represents the gullibleness of this world while his son shows the corruption one can endure. For the remaining characters, a blissful life expectancy can be thought of. McLeavy, the only one who is really ends up being taken into custody, with all the weight, while the true criminals enjoy all the benefits. It allows the reader to see the true effects of what happens when love, money, and deception enter a family atmosphere. McLeavy, who has found himself lying about the stolen money in order to protect his greedy son, ends up being double-crossed by the one he so loved and bored. A disturbing part of the play is when Hal becomes so willing to dump his own mother out of her coffin for a chance to keep a “cool million”.
