Movie Review
This movie was set in Quebec in 1634. Its main focus is the story of how the Jesuit priests try to civilize the untamed Indians and turn them to Christianity. The story starts off with Father LaForgue, along with his companion Daniel, making thier way across the treacherous mountains to reach the Huron mission. They have many hardships along the way, rough terrain, freezing weather. but those are minimal hardships compared to the savage Indinas they must protect themselves against. Some of the Indians believe that the "Black Robe", as they call the priests, are demons sent to capture thier spirits. As they are on thi
Father LaForgue finally reaches the Huron mission to see an old priest almost dead, and a whole villiage suffering from a disease. I believe that the movie was pretty accurate according to history. Chomina fulfills his death dream and dies on the island he sees on the way, the island of which he has been dreaming about for a long time. Clothing, tools, and other materials they used were also accurate for the time setting. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. The movie ends with a footnote saying that 15 years later, the Huron were massacred by the Iriquois because they accepted Christianity and stopped fighting thier enemies. In Chomina's dream, he kept seeing the "Black Robe walk alone", so to this tale Annunka and Daniel take Father LaForgue near the mission and let him go back to Annunka's people. The only ones left are Father LaForgue, Daniel, Annuka(the girl daniel fell in love with), Chomina(the chief), and Chomina's young son, but they are taken prisoner and beaten brutally. Father convinces this priest that if they become baptized, they can ask for Jesus' help to make them better and he baptizes alot of them. Annunka comes up with a clever plan, and four of them escape and continue on towards the mission. The Algonquins leave him behind on their way to the Huron mission, but decide to keep thier promise to Champlain and go back to get him. One part of the movie that was accurate was when they were captured by the Iriquois and are made to run the gauntlet of the warriors. er way to the mission, Daniel falls in love with one of the Indian girls and becomes part of thier tribe. This was an actual custom by some tribes when they captured enemies. Daniel wants to go with him, but after realizing all that they have done to Annunka and her people, he tells him "We have taken everything she has", and that Daniel must stay with her.
