Hair

             The dictionary definition of the word "hair" is, "a threadlike outgrowth esp. of the skin of
             a mammal; also: a covering (as of the head) consisting of such hairs" But in real life
             terms, hair acts as much more than just a threadlike outgrowth covering the head. Hair is,
             long, short, curly, blonde, brunette, wavy, highlighted, dyed, permed, layered, clipped,
             shaved, trimmed, parted, cut, and bleached. Hair and what people do with their hair
             defines their nationality or their beliefs. Some spend thousands of dollars on procedures
             to replant hair back into the follicles. Some spend hundreds yearly at the local hair salon
             to make their hair look a certain way. The hair product industry produces billions of
             dollars every year. Late night info-mercials promising to regrow hair, or cover bald spots.
             Products that allow you to cut your hair yourself, products that make it fun and easy to
             cut a friends hair. Hair sprays, gels, shampoos, conditioners, dyes, extensions, ties, and
             the list goes on and on. Hair is definitely much more than just a threadlike covering of

             bodies. In some Islamic cultures cutting of hair is strictly prohibited. In African American
             culture, hair plays a huge role in some households, and had a great effect on their self
             esteem, at least in the fifties and sixties, as can be seen in Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s essay
             "In the Kitchen." " 'Good' hair was 'straight,' 'bad' hair kinky. Even in the late sixties, at
             the height of Black Power, almost nobody could bring themselves to say 'bad' for good
             and 'good' for bad." (p.60) Hair can act as a means to promote or discourage high self
