beauty and the beast

The story “Everyday Use” is about a mother with two daughters. They did not have their father around and their mom had to raise them all by herself. The sisters, Maggie and Dee, are very different. Maggie has many hindrances in her life but Dee, on the other hand, is a girl with ambition to have a better life, and she would tramp on people to get it. Her mom said: “Hesitation was no part of her nature”(29).
Dee is a young girl who is ashamed of her poverty. She never brought friends to her house and she hated it. Her mom thought that she also hated her sister, but found out that she did not when she got money to go to school. Dee was just troubled being there where she didn’t want to be. Dee often read for them and she showed them how intellectuals acted. Dee didn’t want to be stupid and worked hard to get more out of life.
She wanted to be rich and smart; she wanted to show everybody what she could be. In her eyes appearance is everything and we can see that in the story. She is described as full figured woman and fashionable, instead of her sister who is described as a little girl with scars and is ignorant.
When we come a little further in the story we can see that Dee is not that smart at all. Dee tries to get an old quilt to display to her friends from her mom and the mother had promised it to Maggie. Dee can’t see that everyday use is what this quilt is for, not to hang it on wall. Dee gets furious about the quilt because she can’t have it and insults Maggie without thinking. Dee shows us there that she hasn’t learned a thing except reading and writing. I think that learning values is the most important thing that we can learn in our live, and Dee doesn’t have a clue about it. We can always display how beautiful we are and pretend to be smart, but knowing what is right or wrong is the best way.
