Sanctuary

The church, back in those days, was considered a sanctuary to people. A sanctuary literally means a church, mosque, or a temple. However, sanctuary can be broken down into other things as well. The church had a lot more power a long time ago than they did now. This was all superstition however, that the priests, cardinals, and popes had the power from God.

Power is the thing that separated the normal people and the upper-class members of the community. The church had the most power of all. They had control over most the people and even the king himself. This superstition is why church became a “sanctuary” for people. The other meaning of sanctuary is a place of refuge or asylum. That means not even the kings men could arrest or harm a person inside sanctuary.

A person inside a church was considered a person that could not be harmed. The person could not be arrested (Like Esmeralda, when the king’s men found out that she didn’t have a city

. . .

When he got convicted for a crime he didn’t commit, he couldn’t do anything about it because he left the sanctuary (However, it was not his fault because the priest’s brother ordered him to go and bring Esmeralda back to sanctuary). You are still vulnerable to attacks by the FBI or the CIA even in your home because you probably do not have a lot of power to stop them, but you could take refuge in your home if you were under attack.

People looked at sanctuary with awe because the people who ran the church had much power. pass during the Day of Fools) or harmed. Quasimodo was defenseless when he left sanctuary to participate in the Day of Fools. This obviously would make some people angry, such as the priest’s brother, who was the lead judge and law, because he could not make any arrests (Including Esmeralda) when inside sanctuary.

Sanctuary in today’s world would probably be home. Even a person who has done a crime could not be sent to jail, or have anything done to them (Like the priest’s brother who killed Phoebus and blamed Esmeralda for it). This made the people’s faith grow in fear and awe. The sanctuary is a place of great power and awe that should not be underestimated by anyone; especially a long time ago during the times when the head of the church had more power than the king. Also, the other description of a sanctuary is a place of refuge.

However, once you left sanctuary, you would be helpless and could not defend yourself. Home fits every description of a sanctuary. Nowadays, no one has that much power to have a place that a person couldn’t be harmed, arrested, or persecuted, but your home is the best place you turn to when you need refuge.
