Advertising and Marketing played a significant and positive role in shaping America in the 1920s. Advertising and Marketing strengthened the economy by acting as a facilitator of growth for big business and subsequently, consumerism. Through the promise of an equal society via the "Democracy of goods" and the "promise" of well being among consumers, Advertising and Marketing caused a dramatic shift in consumer behavior by altering and reshaping the values and perceptions of an entire society.Advertising and Marketing strengthened America's economy through the rise of big business and increased consumerism. Advertising and Marketing also contributed to a great extent in offsetting the negative impact of the Great Depression. The immediate success of advertising led to dramatic sales gains in big business. For example, "Annual ad expenditures for Listerine products rose from $100,000 in 1922 to $5 million in 1928, with Listerine generating a net profit of $4 million over the same period."(1) Other companies such as Crisco, Life Buoy, and Lucky Strike benefited from the introduction of advertising as well. When scientists and inventors made new products, advertising showed people their benefits and integrated them into their lives, creating a demand for more products (14). e businesses prospering which in turn, benefited the economy. Ads also served as missionaries of modernity as they dealt with the new vs. Ads educated customers on the problems facing society and provided a solution to these problems. The Great Depression presented the American dream of individual success through equal access to ample opportunities (9). Advertising and Marketing demonstrated problems and provided solutions to benefit the consumers thereby, benefiting and strengthening the economy and transitioning society to a new age of consumerism. This fear strategy placed guilt and shame on the lives of consumers as the advertising implied an underlying/subliminal message of, "If you don't buy this product, you'll be sorry. Advertising and Marketing played a significant role in creating demand for a product or service that might not otherwise exist. Advertising impacted society through the "Democracy of Goods". Advertising and Marketing had a significant and positive influence on the well being of consumers. During these hard times, ads were used to show how such a product could benefit the consumer.
