Comparitive Essay of Brave New World and The handmaids Tale

Margaret Attwoods, The Handmaid's Tale and Aldus Huxly's Brave New World are both portraying the future yet the authors do it in different ways. The authors views on government and how to run a society are very different. The opinions on sex are different. The characters in both novels have specified dress codes. All of these are portrayed differently in both novels. Attwood portrays the government in the future much different than in Brave New World. The government is a totalitarianism government which is clear from the first chapter. The women are sleeping together in a large room where someone is monitoring them and the lights are not turned off. Systems of surveillance are very important in a totalitarianism government. Even a wife, the highest ranking woman, is defined in relation to a man, her husband. Men have names like commander, Guardian and

There are no Unmen in this society. Sexuality in the world state is just as much surveillance. In Brave New World sex is one of the best things ever. Also, the Eye's wear regular tourist clothes . Also in Gilead lesbians are natural and existing. Gilead wishes to control negative publicity. The children of Gilead are a valuable commodity. An example of this is "Alpha children wear gray. This leads to no war or fighting but peace and happiness. The plan is to institutionalize the practice of keeping a mistress. "(24) Alphas are highly respected by the society and known as geniuses, The Alpha's do not travel on land but by helicopter. Only the Alphas and Betas castes attend the Eton school. Betas are highly respected but do not work as hard as the alpha cast.
