bitter tears
Rainer Werner Fassbinder wrote The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant. It was originally written in German and translated by Denis Calandra.Bitter Tears tells the story of a thirty-four year old woman (Petra) played by Rebecca Wiscoky, who lives in Germany during the present time. She is recently divorced from her second husband. Her first husband died in car accident while she was still pregnant with her daughter. Her daughter is away at boarding school Petra is a successful fashion designer who lives with her maid Marlene played by Anita Durst. Marlene never speaks but we see that she is clearly in love with Petra. She knows exactly what Petra wants before she asks for it and is always there before Petra calls for her. Petra is introduced to Karin played by Tami Dixon, a troubled twenty-three year old woman through a mutual pretentious friend Sidonie played by Roselyn Coleman. Karin is estranged from her husband who is still in Australia from where she and Sidonie have just returned. Petra immediately becomes enamored with Karin. Karin seems to have affection for Petra but her attracti
Petra is looking for love, beauty, romance, and youth in her life. The phone rings and her mo!ther answers, she announces scornfully that it is Karin on the phone. The pain that she displayed is one I am sure many men and women can and did identify with. We observe Marlene's growing obsession for Petra, she continuously spies on the couple and treats Karin with contempt. It does not matter who she is giving or receiving love from all that matters is that !she has it. Rebecca Wisocky as Petra achieved the goal of a woman searching for love and attention. She needs someone who she in turn can need. Confirmation of the need Petra has for those things in her life is when she turns her attention and affection towards Marlene. She of course does not immediately call. Marlene by this time is fed up with Petra's lack of appreciation for her. She begins to shower Marlene with the same verbal affection that she showered upon Karin. She needs to constantly know that Karin loves her. Petra becomes obsessive and is constantly showering affection and words of love upon Karin. Karin proclaims her love for him and immediately agrees to meet with him.
