A Farewell to Arms

             In the story A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, we have two very bored people who find each other and give everything up just to be with one another. Frederick Henry and Catherine Barkley are young and confused about what they want out of life. They find each other during WWI and everything seems to fall into place for them. In the end it falls apart and Frederick is left all alone. Is the heart ache of losing someone worth the trouble of changing for them? Catherine and Frederick both changed greatly to please one-another.
             Catherine was a completely innocent British girl who had never loved before. She was in the war to get some adventure in her live. After she met Frederick Henry, she believed she had found what she was looking for. He played all of her little games by saying what she wanted him to say. Neither of them loved one-another but when she asked him to he was perfectly willing to please her by saying, "I love you." As the relationship progressed Catherine really did start to love Frederick and proved so when she said, "I'll say what you wish and do what you wish . . . I'll do what you want and say what you want and then I'll be a great success." She gave up her self-will because all she wanted to do was please Frederick. She loved him so much that she had sex with him and didn't want to get married even after she found out she was pregnant because they would be separated. As she put it, there wasn't any more of herself; just what he wanted.
             Frederick was a young American who was bored out of his mind at home and decided to join the Italian army to be designated as an ambulance driver. He had plenty of sexual relationships during him time in Italy. He sought out Catherine for maybe the same purpose but instead he fell in love. After his brush with death, he realized just how special Catherine was to him. His opinion on many things changed because of his love for Cat...
