A Farewell to Arms
In the story A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, we have two very bored people who find each other and give everything up just to be with one another. Frederick Henry and Catherine Barkley are young and confused about what they want out of life. They find each other during WWI and everything seems to fall into place for them. In the end it falls apart and Frederick is left all alone. Is the heart ache of losing someone worth the trouble of changing for them? Catherine and Frederick both changed greatly to please one-another. Catherine was a completely innocent British girl who had never loved before. She was in the war to get some adventure in her live. After she met Frederick Henry, she believed she had found what she was looking for. He played all of her little games by saying what she wanted him to say. Neither of them loved one-another but when she asked him to he was perfectly willing to please her by saying, "I love you." As the relationship progressed Catherine real
He sought out Catherine for maybe the same purpose but instead he fell in love. After his brush with death, he realized just how special Catherine was to him. I'll do what you want and say what you want and then I'll be a great success. In the end if you were to ask Frederick if it was all worth the heart ache he would say yes. When he does go back to war, he doesn't like to talk about Catherine because he doesn't want her to be talked about like one of the whores. All they want to do is please each other and will do only what they think the other one wishes. She loved him so much that she had sex with him and didn't want to get married even after she found out she was pregnant because they would be separated. In my life this has been true, also. Love can change people for the better or for the worse. They were so in love with each other but they wanted to change themselves into what they thought the other person wanted them to be. The many good times they had definitely out weighed the bad times. ly did start to love Frederick and proved so when she said, "I'll say what you wish and do what you wish .
